MARGE DOYLE AND SIERRA CLUB HOLD RALLY FOR WATER IN APPLE VALLEY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MAY 18, 2018 – JOSHUA TREE, CA — Marge Doyle, RN, endorsed Democratic candidate for Congress in the CA08, and the Sierra Club will host a rally and Day of Action toProtect Our Water on May 19 in Apple Valley to draw attention to water extraction and other environmental issues at stake in the coming June 5 primary. More than 100 people are expected to attend and hear local speakers challenge Congress and the administration’s drive to sell our precious public lands to the highest bidders.
Doyle has made protecting public lands in the Mojave Desert and the mountain areas a pillar of her campaign. She is running against Rep. Paul Cook, who has repeatedly voted against protecting the environment without regard to the thousands of jobs tied to eco-tourism. “The California 8th holds millions of acres of pristine and irreplaceable public lands that employ tens of thousands of people, a major driver of our local economy,” said Doyle. “I promise that I will do everything in my power to protect and preserve our public lands, our water, and our other natural resources from the big corporations that have bought our current Congressman, so they can drill, drain, and mine at will.”
H.R. 23, which was co-sponsored by Cook, has passed the House and is awaiting Senate action. The bill would erode California’s Public Trust Doctrine, the Endangered Species Act, and the ability of government agencies to regulate how much water corporations can pump out of public lands. This would have devastating effects throughout California and also effectively block private citizens from taking action to limit Nestlé’s controversial water extraction operations in the San Bernardino National Forest, as well as Cadiz, Inc.’s outrageous proposal to drain 16 billion gallons of water per year from beneath the Mojave Desert to water lawns in Orange County. Cook has flip-flopped on his position on water theft for the past seven years, while Cadiz and Nestlé have funneled thousands of dollars into his campaign coffers.
To raise awareness of this alarming plan to sell our water for profit, Marge Doyle and the Sierra Club will host a rally on May 19 from 10 am to 12 pm at the Apple Valley Civic Center. The rally will be followed by Get Out the Vote efforts. The public is encouraged to attend. Water and lunch will be provided.
